DEVENDRA, VALI, MANIA MANIA & MEL

Last night I went to see Devendra Banhart play and even though he's cut all his hair off, he was still dreamy and funny and fabulous. I saw Mania Mania designer Mel Kamlser there in a long wine-coloured velvet 1930s dress. She showed me her new ring. "The stone belonged to Vali," she said. She was talking about Vali Myers, the subject of a feature I wrote in the new issue of Harper's Bazaar Australia. What you think mostly when you hear about expatriate Australian artist Vali Myers is: what a character! And then you think: Where have all the characters gone?

It is tricky to categorise this painter, diarist, dancer, eccentric, animal magnet and vagabond muse, although she was all these things and more. Myers was one in a million back when that meant something, before everyone got so busy referencing hipster this and bohemian that without really meaning it. You want boho? Myers will give you boho! She spent three decades living in an Italian ravine with 30 dogs and a donkey. Her best friend of 14 years was a fox – a real one, which she carried over her shoulder like a living, breathing stole.

Vali is the inspiration behind Mania Mania's Reve collection. It's divine. Oh, and Devendra loves it too - Mel gave him a Mania Mania Lightening Bolt ring. I think Vali would approved.

PUSHING 40S

Am feeling all 40s. No, not like I'm pushing 40, you cheeky sods. I mean 1940s. How beautiful of the August Mrs. Hinze cover of UK Vogue? And YSL's giving us the film noir treatment. And as for Miu Miu - wooooo hoooo. I do so love a statement sleeve. You?

INSPIRATION FILES #24 GREAT GATSBY

Oh, the highs and lows. I've always adored this novel, and its unparalleled evocation of 1920s glamour; the romance, the tea dresses, the whole idea of Daisy dancing in the moonlight on the beach. Thus I am A) gutted that the original house said to have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald has been torn down (why, why, WHY let them? They are going to build five horrid modern houses on the land - cretins!) and B) thrilled that Catherine Martin is set on recreating the movie magic here in Sydney.
Bring on the flapper styling.

FASHION'S NEW MOOD - SHORT WITH A TAIL?

So there was I thinking Franca Sozzani had done more to encourage designers to embrace the idea of body diversity by designing delicious duds for the fuller figure, than anyone else in fashion. That's thanks to the recent cover of Italian Vogue celebrating curvacious beauties, including our own Aussie girl of the plus size moment, Robyn Lawley. Then along comes Marc Jacobs to turn all that on its head. Talk about changing the shape of things to come. He of the high octane glamour has turned his talents to custom creating a wardrobe for a voluptuous three-foot high fashion editor with a tail - Miss Piggy, who plays a Frogue editor in the upcoming Muppet Movie. Who says glamour must be six-foot tall with a skinny ass? Now what would you dress Miss Piggy in?

OBSESSED WITH...www.annadellorusso.com

Clearly Anna Della Russo is a genius fashion icon marvel.
Her blog makes me laugh and sends my sartorial spirits soaring.
I stole these pics off it - in which she places her super-brilliant head on catwalk looks she likes ( I hope she doesn't mind this thievery - she shouldn't because I am her major fan). I don't know why all the pics are surrounded by bananas - but I know I love them. Is this not the stuff fabulosity is made of?? Be inspired.
Merci Anna
